Generous Women: An Appreciation

Generous Women is about the women who have given so much much of themselves to the man I am today," writes Earl Hamner. This fond appreciation is a warm thank-you for gifts freely given and a reminder that, truly, no man is an island unto himself.

My Thoughts:

When I came across Generous Women: An Appreciation on our library’s website search page, I was intrigued.

Being a fan of The Waltons and Spencer’s Mountain, I knew who the author was, but had never read any of his work. So I thought, “Why not?”

This book is written about all the women that had a hand in his life whether it be on a personal or business level. He starts with his own Mother and ends with his daughter. The many women in between are some who are well known and some who were “behind” the scenes in his life.

The gift the author has at putting his thoughts, feelings and emotions on paper is amazing. He makes you feel that you have lived through the experience that he is writing about. To learn a little about the life of the man who created the character of John-Boy is fascinating, because the life we see in John- Boy is very much like the life that Earl Hamner lived. For example, Hamner thought he could pay his way to Heaven when he was a young boy.

This is a book that is well worth the time.
