A Resting Place {Thankful Thursdays Linkup #66}

It was the field trip every student looked forward to when they got to 5th grade. It was known as the 5th grade field trip throughout the school and it was talked about by everyone. A day of hiking, picnicking, and swimming at the old grist mill was all the buzz for my class. As a first time hiker, I didn’t realize how special a resting place the halfway point up that massive mountain of granite would be. It was a place for weary legs to rest and water to quench the hot thirst from the heat.

The mountain beckoned all who drove through the gates to hike to the top. The hike starts at a nice easy incline, but quickly turns into a steep trek. Thankfully most of the pathway is shaded by large pine trees. The shade from those trees gives a little reprieve from the sun’s heat in the warmer months of a southern spring. Hot and sweaty, I was thankful when I saw the pavilion and water fountains. After drinking what seemed like a gallon of water and resting, the hike continued up past the tree line. The view from the top was amazing even with the Atlanta haze in the background.

A Resting Place

A Resting Place is surely an appropriate name for Jesus. In His arms, we can just rest – rest in our time of weariness. We can confidently sit down, knowing when we stand back up we will continue on in our walk of life. When we are thirsty, Jesus, the Good Shepherd leads us to drink at the still water. (Psalm 23:2) He shelters us from the heat that pierces our hearts as Satan works to overcome us. (Isaiah 25:4) Jesus invites us to come to Him when things are too heavy to carry. He wants to lighten the load, He promises to give rest.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28

When we are weary and don’t see a light at the end of the tunnel, listen for His voice, answer the call, and abide in Him. Jesus wants to be our Resting Place.

My faith has found a resting place,

Not in device nor creed;

I trust the Ever-living One,

His wounds for me shall plead.
