/I love quick and easy dinners! If they are a fast clean up, even better. Spicy Italian Sausage Sandwiches fall into these categories, perfect for a busy weeknight or anytime.
Over the years when I shared
for sandwiches we loved, I’ve heard from others saying they loved them also. I’m hoping Spicy Italian Sausage Sandwiches will be the same for you since I heard no complaints from my fellas.

, but with a few tweaks of my own...Voila! Two neat things about this recipe – it can be cooked on the stovetop to keep from heating up the house in the hot summer months. (very similar to
You can even substitute the spicy sausage for a mild sausage or even a chicken and apple sausage for a sweet, mild taste.
I love the sweet taste of orange, red, and yellow bell peppers. I used two whole bell peppers in this recipe. Since the bell peppers give off water while baking, you’ll not need any oil in the pan.
I used Johnsonville’s hot Italian sausage and the chicken and apple sausage for both times I made the sandwiches. I loved them both, but my husband and son like the hot Italian sandwiches more. Use your favorite brand of sausage.
Provolone cheese, oh my word, how I love you on sandwiches. For all my sandwiches, I use two pieces. I slice both pieces in half and place 2 halves on the bottom bun and then top all the yumminess with the other two.
If you make this on the stovetop, you can toast the inside of the buns in a skillet with a dab of butter.
If you’re like me and hate scrubbing pans, be sure to line your pan with foil for easy cleanup.
Spicy Italian Sausage Sandwiches
Ingredients:
1 package Spicy Italian Sausage (I use Johnsonville’s Hot Italian Sausage)
1 Onion
2 Sweet Bell Peppers
6 Sub Sandwich Rolls
12 slices Provolone Cheese
Butter
Mayo - optional
Directions:
Preheat oven to 400°.
Line a sheet pan with foil. Slice bell peppers, onion, and sausage and place on the pan. Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes, take out and stir everything around. Place back in the oven and continue baking until sausage is cooked through. Total time should be about 30 minutes depending on your oven.
Butter the inside of the sandwich rolls and place them cut side up on a second pan. During the last 3-4 minutes of baking, place cheese slices on the bottom bun. Bake until the rolls are golden and cheese is melted. Spoon sausage and peppers onto buns and place extra cheese slices on top. Add optional mayo to the top bread portion.
